What is Siemens PLC ST20?
Siemens SIMATIC S7-200 SMART CPU ST20 is a compact Micro PLC designed for machine and small automation applications. It works as the main control unit of an automation system: it receives signals from sensors and switches, processes them according to the PLC program, and controls outputs such as motors, valves, contactors and other actuators.
The ST20 is a DC/DC/DC transistor-output CPU with 12 digital inputs and 8 digital outputs, operating with a 24 V DC supply.
How ST20 works
Sensors / Switches → ST20 PLC → Program Processing → Outputs / Actuators
For example, in a machine:
- A sensor detects a product.
- The sensor sends a signal to the ST20 input.
- The PLC processes the signal according to the programmed logic.
- The ST20 activates an output.
- The output can operate a motor, solenoid valve, relay or other control device.
FEATURES OF SIEMENS ST20 PLC
1. 12 Digital Inputs
ST20 provides 12 onboard 24 V DC digital inputs for connecting sensors, push buttons, switches and other digital signals.
2. 8 Digital Outputs
It has 8 onboard 24 V DC transistor outputs for controlling suitable actuators and machine-control devices.
3. 24 V DC Power Supply
The ST20 operates from a 20.4–28.8 V DC supply range, making it suitable for standard 24 V DC control panels.
4. PROFINET Communication
The S7-200 SMART platform provides an integrated PROFINET interface, allowing the PLC to communicate with HMI devices and other automation equipment.
5. RS485 Communication
ST20 also supports an integrated RS485 communication interface, useful for connecting compatible HMI and other serial devices.
6. High-Speed Control
The transistor-output ST20 supports high-speed pulse outputs, making it suitable for applications involving pulse-based control such as stepper or servo applications. Siemens documents support for up to 2 motion-control axes on ST20.
7. Expandable System
The S7-200 SMART system can be expanded with additional modules, allowing the controller to handle more I/O and application requirements.

9. Programming Memory
